What a Drag!!

It is Friday night and the word on the street has been all about Miss Coco Peru's show in Providence. It was a fundraiser held at the Hi-Hat. The Jazz and Blues club is this years sponsor for all major Pride Events. (I was just there for the Miss Gay Rhode Island Pagaent.)

So the Newport crowd bought one big VIP table so that we can enjoy the show in style. We drove up to Providence (or as us Newporters call it "travelling over seas"). We had a lovely dinner at the most exquiste restaurant in Providence before heading to the show.

We arrived at the Hi-Hat one half hour in advance to assure parking and of course everyone had the same idea. Imagine playing That's My Parking Spot with a bunch of big drag queens in a Beetle. That was worth the trip right there!

Of course.... as soon as I enter the noisey club, my cell phone rings off the hook. A day in the life of a small business owner. It was a gay couple staying at another hotel....????.... asking me what's going on and things to do in the area. (How rude. I don't know why people think that's an okay thing to do.) So being the nice person I am, I told them about the wonderful show of Miss Coco Peru that was about to begin; they seemed slightly less than infuriated probably because if they had known earlier then they could have come to have a good time. Ahhhh karma....

Anyway...Back to the show....

The glasses were being shipped from the bar by the tray. They actually ran out of glasses early on and we had to switch to plastic. It was all good because most people were so engaged in the show.

There must have been dozens of drag queens showing off their talent. Some more convincing than others. The room was packed and we suddenly felt very lucky for knowing the event coordinator so well. Otherwise we would have been in the standing room only circle.

The show begins promptly. Coco makes a grand entrance with rave applause. Not to spoil the surprise of what her show is about, I'll skip to the end....laughter and more rave applause.

After the show, I pulled her aside and got a picture taken with her. I've also heard of her show going to Manchester and Boston next. She is worth seeing.

I was surprised talking to her after the show. She is quite quiet and humble. She is almost bashful. I saw Coco Peru later at the bar, Stable, which is Michael Slade's new cowboy bar. Though that night there was probably more princess ponies in stable, if you understand me. Coco never did an after speech or try to be in the limelight at all. I really respect that for such a big performer as she is.

The Newport gang finished the night with dancing, karaoke and a safe drive back over seas to our sweet home on the island.
