Two Special Events for Earth Day!
This week the Aquidneck Land Trust offers two programs that are FREE and open to the public in celebration of Earth Day.
This Earth Day, Thursday, April 22nd, at 6:30pm at the Jane Pickens Theater in Newport, the Aquidneck Land Trust and Salve Regina University are teaming up to deliver a free and special Earth Day event for the Aquidneck Island community as part of the Land Trust's 2010 Conservation Speaker Series and McKillop Library's monthly programs: a screening of the internationally acclaimed film HOME by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. Complimentary refreshments, with a focus on local foods, will be served.
HOME is a remarkable achievement in filmmaking that captures the Earth's most amazing landscapes in a new and astonishing light, showcasing its incomparable beauty and acknowledging its vulnerability to change. To make this film, award winning aerial photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand travelled around the planet over 18 months filming over 50 countries from the air. This movie has a mission and carries a message for humanity: "to become aware of its spoliation of the Earth’s riches and change its patterns of consumption."
The schedule for this special Earth Day event is as follows:
6:30pm - Welcoming Reception
7:00pm - Start of the Movie HOME
Please RSVP to Courtney Huth at chuth@ailt.org or 401.849.2799 x 19
Also this week, as part of the Land Trust's Land Matters Walk & Talk Series, help us celebrate our 20th anniversary as we tour the very first property conserved by the Aquidneck Land Trust. The landscaping on this historic property was designed by the firm of Frederick Law Olmstead. We will stroll the property's winding paths and expansive lawns bordered by tulip trees, beeches, maples and butternuts, as we will learn the history behind this gorgeous, historic parcel.
This free tour will be led by Tim Brown of T. J. Brown Landscaping. Plan to meet at 9 am, Saturday April 24th, at 459 Bellevue Avenue in Newport.
Please RSVP to Courtney Huth at chuth@ailt.org or 401.849.2799 x 19.
ALT's mission is to preserve Aquidneck Island's open spaces and natural character for the lasting benefit of our community. ALT has conserved 2,290.57 +/- acres on Aquidneck Island. ALT is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. For more information, visit www.AquidneckLandTrust.org.
