Twelfth Night Shines

Trinity Rep is one of Rhode Island best theater troop. They are partnered with the prestigious Brown University theater department which gives them a steady stream of extremely talented actors.

The last time I went, I saw 'A Christmas Carol'. This is an annual trek for most Rhode Islanders. We all saw it every year growing up. If our parents didn't take us, the school department would organize a field trip. Trinity changes it every year so everyone is sure to see the latest techniques for the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. One year it was a tall dark sinister man; another year it was a cloaked being; and another it was simply a shadow that loomed over the audience as if saying it could be in all our destinies.

The latest was Shakespeares 'Twelfth Night'. I have seen Shakespeare in the park in Newport and other performances at various theaters in Providence but this one takes the cake. Music, dancing, and personality really brought the story to life. They change the setting to Victorian era making that more interesting. The costumes were perfect. Unlike most other productions where the actors ramble off prose so quickly, one might as well be trying to decifer the Rosetta Stone, Trinity's actors spoke slowly and hit the punchline on every joke and pun. The audience never missed a beat. It was marvelous. Hilarious and romantic, Twelfth Night is the perfect Valentines Day play.
