"PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Every once in a while, even the most devout islander will bring themselves to venture across the bridge and into the big city. Some do it every day. Others, only once in a blue moon.
If the buzz surrounding this weekend’s inaugural Winter Chili Festival at the Rhode Island Convention Center is to be believed, then this Saturday, Feb. 27 may just be such an occasion.
According to organizers, this new family-friendly event promises to create a chili lover’s paradise as it takes over the entire 5th floor of the convention center. Among the local restaurants competing for bragging rights for best chili will be the Rhode Island Quahog Co., whose planning on serving up what else but quahog chili.
In addition to the ample sampling opportunities, the event will feature culinary demonstrations, a chili pepper eating contest, a Chinese Auction, a children’s play area, tailgate lounge and a live radio broadcast by culinary personality Bruce Newbury.
Tickets cost $15 for adults and $10 for students and senior, and proceeds will go to benefit Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Prevent Child Abuse Rhode Island, and the J. Arthur Trudeau Memorial Center.
